In the second class we have the tough, coarse grain timber, which could be used for sleepers but would require creosoting under pressure.
This is a less effective, though usually satisfactory, method of treating the wood, but is used because it requires less of the creosoting material.
Softwood was widely used, but its life was limited if it was not treated with preservative, and some railways set up creosoting plants for the purpose.
