The study of French-speaking children found that determiners were produced earlier with monosyllabic words, and later with disyllabic and trisyllabic words.
We therefore investigated vowel duration in disyllabic and trisyllabic nouns with initial stress, as well as in trisyllabic nouns with non-initial stress.
It should be noted that trisyllabic items allow for one stress pattern more than disyllabic ones.
Importantly, data from the children who alternate between non-reduced and reduced trisyllabic proper names would seem to be consistent with this view.
Consequently, trisyllabic words have the pattern s ss.
Importantly, the ranking does not affect trisyllabic words.
The need for this constraint is seen in a trisyllabic word of the form (ss)(s).
These eight trisyllabic measures and the basic measures for heavy and light syllables form the descriptive core of the trika system.
Their length ranged between one and three syllables and each set contained the same number of mono-, di- and trisyllabic masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns.
