The purpose of the operation was to compete with emerging smaller competitors, and provide a low-fare alternative to the main services, thereby increasing ridership by offering cheaper travel options.
Then there are the coach-air services—again a low-fare through-service combining the cheapness of coach travel with the convenience of air travel for the over water crossing.
Were it now also to be enabled to revert to its low-fare, high-cost policies of last year, it would impose at leat a further £200 million levy on ratepayers.
In my view such a reliable, frequent, low-fare paying public service will be of benefit to the residents, visitors and commercial interests.
Many more people are travelling on cheap, low-fare coaches, but in my view the effects on the community have not been anywhere near fully examined.
