Examples of epiphyses

  • Pressure epiphyses assist in transmitting the weight of the human body and are the regions of the bone that are under pressure during movement or locomotion.

  • Both had skeletal abnormalities of the hands and feet: brachydactyly, cone-shaped epiphyses, and an abnormal metaphyseal-phalangeal pattern profile.

  • Unlike pressure epiphyses, these regions do not assist in weight transmission.

  • As these cartilaginous zones become obliterated, the epiphyses are said to be closed and no further lengthening of the bones will occur.

  • The tibia is categorized as a long bone and is as such composed of a diaphysis and two epiphyses.

  • In long bones, the secondary centres appear in the epiphyses.

  • The epiphyses, carpal bones, coracoid process, medial border of the scapula, and acromion are still cartilaginous.

  • The ends of epiphyses are covered with hyaline cartilage (articular cartilage).
