• One died before a donor became available and the other underwent successful transplantation at seven months of age and is doingwell 21 months postoperatively.

• Humidification will prevent heat loss, preserve ciliary activity and prevent drying of secretions, improving the chances of good respiratory function postoperatively.

• Postoperatively, hypoxemia was markedly improved, and was associated with a reduction of the level of pulmonary hypertension, contributing to marked symptomatic improvement.

• Following return to the intensive care unit, ventricular function remained poor despite ionotropic support and the child died eight hours postoperatively.
