• The multifidus muscle attaches to the mammillary process and this muscle extends through the length of the vertebral column, giving support.

• On either side of the middle sacral crest is a shallow sacral groove, which gives origin to the multifidus muscle.

• The problem with the multifidus muscles continues even after the pain goes away, and is probably an important reason why the pain comes back.

• The upper three are covered at their points of exit by the multifidus and divide into medial and lateral branches.
