• If haemorrhage originates below the uterine cervix, a haematoma is usually present in the internal iliac cavity and in the preperitoneal space.

• Sometimes an alternative approach must be used because of occlusion of femoral or iliac veins.

• A selective catheter is used to study and gain access to the internal iliac arteries, under fluoroscopic guidance and often utilising road-mapping.

• This avoids potential major complications such as: i accidental ligature of the common iliac artery compromising the arterial supply to the lower limb (white leg).
