• If there is a bony projection from the calcaneus, it should be shaved off with the chisel. 

• A strong band of the plantar aponeurosis connects the projecting part of the tuberosity with the lateral process of the tuberosity of the calcaneus.

• It separates the two oblique grooves of the lateral surface of the calcaneus.

• It is made up by the calcaneus, the talus, the navicular, the three cuneiforms, and the first, second, and third metatarsals.

• Connected to the talus at the subtalar joint, the calcaneus, the largest bone of the foot, is cushioned inferiorly by a layer of fat.

• It is commonly injured in sprain-type inversion injuries producing an avulsion fracture at the anterolateral process of the calcaneus.

• There are three articulating facets between the talus and the calcaneus, delineated as the anterior, middle and posterior facets.

• The fibers of the "superior retinaculum" ("external annular ligament") are attached above to the lateral malleolus and below to the lateral surface of the calcaneus.

• Interestingly, failure most often occurred at the proximal attachment to the calcaneus, which is consistent with the usual location of symptoms (i.e. in plantar fasciitis).

• The talus, calcaneus, and navicular are considered the proximal row of tarsal bones.

• The calcaneus has two articulations, being part of the proximal intertarsal joint and the talocalcaneal joint.

• It consists of a right tibia, an astragalus and a calcaneus.

• Other possible fractures in this area, occurring in the cuboid, calcaneus, and fibula, can be associated or can be mistaken for a toddler's fracture.
