The substructure has nine tiers with four stairways, one facing each of the cardinal directions.
The remains were recovered from a scattered deposit within a 3- 3-m excavation unit near the base of the structure's central stairway.
The only in situ items identified were an articulated skeleton on each side of the access stairway, both individuals with their heads to the east.
The passageway was also connected to a new vaulted chamber built above the tomb and stairway.
It was hard to run gas pipes along the steep hillside streets and stairways, which suffered frequent wash-outs.
While its summit building remained in use, the substructure's stairway and its brilliantly decorated panels were covered by a massive new western platform.
Next, a stairway was added, and then the circular platform was enlarged and a thick-walled cist was added.
Unlike its predecessor, however, this second tomb was equipped with a stairway that provided access to the burial chamber from inside the building above.
