The sandpits were rectangular and about 10 m2 and five soil samples were collected per sandpit, one from each corner and one from the centre.
The private areas included kindergarten sandpits and housing estates.
They are present in public and private places including: city backyards, country yards, playgrounds, parks, sandpits, gardens, fields, lake beaches, pavements and streets.
The total prevalence of positive samples were: 0.7% (range 0+ 6.3%) for public playgrounds, 1.2% (range 0+20%) for kindergarten sandpits and 1.6% (range 0+100%) for the housing estates.
I am also examining the possibility of providing a fence round the sandpit to keep out dogs.
There are also quarries, sandpits, mine dumps, and semi-urban land where nobody has any particular interest in keeping down rabbits.
The sandpit is sprayed with disinfectant once a fortnight, and the sand is changed when necessary; it will be changed again very shortly.
It is to be ripped out of the hillside and replaced by a sandpit.
