0 relating to the area between the hip and the tibia (= the large bone at the front of the lower leg):
the iliotibial band
It inserts at the iliotibial band and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur.
Iliopsoas and iliotibial band lengthening can be done arthroscopically.
The figure shows only the proximal part of the iliotibial tract.
Of these the lateral are the stronger, and are continuous with the iliotibial band.
Light aerobic activity (warmup) followed by stretching and strengthening of the proper hamstring, hip flexors, and iliotibial band length is important for reducing recurrences.
Other causes of trochanteric bursitis include uneven leg length, iliotibial band syndrome, and weakness of the hip abductor muscles.
These include shoe-fitting problems, lateral ankle instability, lower limb stress fractures, knee pain, iliotibial band friction syndrome, back pain and tripping.
Possible causes include a tight iliotibial band, neuromas, bursitis, overuse, malalignment, core instability, and patellar maltracking.
