Families became smaller and somewhat more egalitarian and, helped by the increasing availability of household appliances and their longer schooling, children's contributions to housework reduced.
The latter also considers the unpaid labour undertaken by women, recognising that housework is actually work (p. 147).

For example, a room had been decorated in a different colour or a new housework routine had been devised.
Other forms of support are two-way, such as moral support in difficult situations, shopping, helping with housework, minor household repairs, driving (giving lifts) and gardening.
While formal home support with regular housework is delivered to only 19 interviewees, over half the sample receive informal help, chiefly from relatives.
Most respondents were in touch with their family, and their relatives generally offered social contacts and considerable support, particularly with shopping, housework, outings and room-decoration.
Accommodating relatives overnight is necessary when they travel a long distance, or because of their close involvement in housework or care tasks.
