Examples of iliacus

  • It emerges from the lateral border of the psoas major at about its middle, and crosses the iliacus muscle obliquely, toward the anterior superior iliac spine.

  • The iliopsoas consists of psoas major (and occasionally psoas minor) and iliacus, muscles with separate origins but a common insertion on the lesser trochanter of the femur.

  • The hamstrings, adductor magnus and gluteus maximus work concentrically in the legs, while the psoas major, iliacus, and rectus femoris work eccentrically keeping the hip in neutral extension.

  • Between the adductor magnus and the vastus medialis four muscles are inserted: the iliacus and pectineus above; the adductor brevis and adductor longus below.

  • It is slightly concave from side to side, convex from before backward, and gives attachment to a few of the fibers of the iliacus.

  • Here the tendon of the psoas major muscle passes over the medial chamber and the tendon of the iliacus muscle runs over the lateral chamber.

  • It emerges from the lateral border of the psoas major just inferior to the iliohypogastric, and passes obliquely across the quadratus lumborum and iliacus.

  • Though the iliopsoas is sometimes considered a member of the anterior compartment muscles, the iliacus and the psoas portions do not share the same innervation.
