In only one case do we find a toinfinitive straightforwardly replacing a bare infinitive.
As an analogical change, this would have been supported by the parallel use of modals and be in ellipsis contexts and with overt infinitives.
I suggest instead that periphrastic do reflects a merger (as it were) of the habitual do + infinitive and do + 0 ellipsis constructions.
To infinitives are still much more frequent than to -ing complements.
However, in the same volume to infinitive complements still predominate with the adjective, for there are 8 of these.
Strikingly, in a majority of cases, the finite forms were more frequent than their infinitive counterparts.
