It is part of a nature reserve, being important for wildfowl, herons and the great crested grebe, as well as swans and ducks.
I can put up with grebes, of both kinds, with kingfishers of course, and with all the lovely things, but the cormorant to me is not a lovely thing.
The grebe population increased rapidly to 5 or so breeding pairs in the 1970s, rising to 7 or 8 pairs in some years.
Most entries are accompanied by excellent photographs, and each section (divers and grebes, geese, raptors, etc) has a colour plate representing each nominate race.
The bittern and the great crested grebe have been great rarities in my lifetime, but now are not at all uncommon in parts of the country.
We used to have regular visits from great crested grebe on my farm.
It is also a great place for birdwatchersherons, great crested grebes, coots and various species of duck and gull can be found here.
For example, the phalaropes are included but the grebes (some of which spend a substantial part of the year at sea) are excluded.
