The larger zone, corresponding to the irradiated field, included the left lobe and most of the right lobe, and had a mottled appearance.
The calcrete is of two types; the first one is rich in silt with low clay content, and generally overlies the mottled silty sandstone lithofacies.
In the field it appears to be quite similar to maroon mottled siltstone except for its clayey nature.
Note the erosional base of the mottled silty sandstone unit at the extreme left.
The soil type was a sandy-loam with a surface horizon underlain by a weakly-developed clayey, mottled and occasionally concretionary subsoil.
Presence of 10-30 cm thick beds may be related to episodic deposition with long dry periods when sediments were mottled.
These ponds are filled by clay-fractionrich suspension load, producing mottled mudstone.
When prepared, the seeds are somewhat mottled deep-brown and tan.
