Here the hypocotyl is a rudimentary axis between radicle and plumule.
The embryo forms a ligule, and the plumule protrudes from this.
Growth of the plumule does not occur until the cotyledons have grown above ground.
Plumule and radicle lengths were not correlated.
The correlations between these parameters were generally positive and highly significant except for radicle length (never significantly correlated with other parameters) and plumule length (not always correlated with other parameters).
No starch was found in the radicle, the coleoptile and the plumule in either dormant or non-dormant embryos (data not shown).
Mean germination time, germination rate and plumule and radicle length were measured as described above.
However, the hypocotyl-plumule portions of the surviving seedlings were far less adversely affected by dehydration, and this was the criterion for categorizing seedlings as viable.
