There are many causes of rectal hemorrhage, including hemorrhoids (which are dilated vessels in the perianal fat pads), rectal varices, proctitis (of various causes), stercal ulcers and infections.
Trachoma can cause an asymptomatic proctitis, but the symptoms of lymphogranuloma venereum are usually more severe, including pruritus ani, purulent rectal discharge, hematochezia rectal pain and diarrhea or constipation.
It may occur idiopathically (idiopathic proctitis).
If the pelvis is irradiated, prostitis, proctitis, dysuria, metritis, diarrhea, and abdominal pain can occur.
There are many causes of proctitis, some due to infections and others not.
Pseudodiarrhea is often associated with rectal urgency and accompanies irritable bowel syndrome, hyperthyroidism, and anorectal disorders such as proctitis.
Proctitis does not necessarily imply rectal discharge, however some of the types known to be associated with rectal discharge are discussed briefly.
For example, the physician may prescribe antibiotics for proctitis caused by bacterial infection.
