Java pennywort is seen in shady, moist places at altitudes greater than 1300 m.
Growing among the dunes are such species as cordgrass, salt-grass, pine trees, purslane and pennywort.
They can also feed on other aquatic or marsh plants such as centella, greenbrier vine, marsh pennywort, water hyacinth, wild potato, and amaryllis.
Wall pennywort grows to an average of 25 cm (10 in) high.
Centella leaves are also used in sweet pennywort drinks.
Water pennywort has stems that spread horizontally and can float on water.
