A less planned approach to carving in which the sculptor carves the finished sculpture without using intermediate models or maquettes.
The architect had, however, made a maquette of the original design, which is preserved in the southern transept.
These maquettes are then enlarged and cast in bronze.
Animators would then rig skeletons and muscles before animation and final detailed colouring scanned from painted maquettes.
However, owing to the difficulty animating a realistic moving vehicle, the artists filmed the carriage maquettes on a miniature set using stop motion animation.
He experiments with materials, and has a hands-on, tactile approach to maquette making.
In 1908 three of the maquettes were displayed in the museum (see photo below), and two remain on show.
The most successful models were cast into bronze and the bronze maquettes were then fabricated into larger bronze sculptures.
