Macroscopically, the gerbils exhibited fresh petechial haemorrhages of the lung 1 day after infection, but no new haemorrhagic lesions were evident beyond that time.
No granulomatous lesions were detected in any of the gerbils examined.
In addition, calcareous corpuscles were abundant in the neck region and few small granules aggregated in the rostellum of the cysticerci from the gerbils.
However, no information is available on the migration route, the final site of infection, or on the pathogenesis of ascarid larvae in gerbils.
Interestingly, no larvae were recovered from any organs of these gerbils beyond 14 days post-infection.
In the present study, some gerbils became weak and died due to cachexia with neurological symptoms and severe convulsion.
It is interesting, but not surprising, to learn that rodents like gerbils possess two visual systems.
Histopathological sections revealed a larva in the optic nerve of the gerbil 6 days after inoculation (fig. 2).
