The subspecies vary primarily in the amount of white on the cheeks/ear-coverts, wing-coverts and back.
Wing-coverts are speckled grey to blackish, often with pronounced buff to rufous spots.
The under wing-coverts, shoulders and inner webs of the quills are white.
Unlike the male, the female also has whitish edging to the mantle and wing-coverts.
