The toff or 'swell' character of the 1860s appealed to socially-aspiring lower-middle-class males in the audience.
I have not the slightest doubt that vast numbers of working-class people go hunting; anyone who assumes that only toffs hunt is wildly wrong.
This is not a question of toffs versus the working class.
It is not a case of urban guerrillas versus toffs.
I am afraid, for many people on ignorance, prejudice and a dislike of toffs.
So much for the myth that the council only looks after the high arts, arts for "toffs", whoever such people may be.
Most certainly: let us hear from a real toff.
They are not a collection of toffs in top hats out to enjoy themselves spoiling the countryside.
